How to Use a Natural Shampoo Bar

Shampoo bars can be intimidating at first, simply because we as a society have gotten so used to seeing our shampoo come in bottles. It just takes a little adjustment period though, and once you make the switch, you’ll be so glad you did!

And in case you were wondering, YES. Shampoo bars work for long hair, and curly hair as well as short! Ours is formulated to work beautifully with any hair type.

There are two basic techniques for using a natural shampoo bar. You can use either one, or a combination of the two, depending on the length and texture of your hair.

For this method, thoroughly wet your hair and simply rub your shampoo bar directly on your head. Keep letting the water run through your hair gently as you work up a good lather. From there, you can set the bar down and continue with fingers to massage the soap through your hair and onto your scalp.

Rinse thoroughly under the water, continuing scalp massage as you do so.

We’ve found the Direct Method to work best for shorter hair. It also works well for the top portion of longer, thicker hair. If your hair is very fine, and tangles easily, you will most likely have the best results with the Pre-Lather Method.

For this method, thoroughly wet your hair. Wet your hands and your shampoo bar, and rub together until you have a good lather going. You can set the bar down, and work the lather through your hair starting with your scalp. Repeat as necessary until you’ve washed through the length of your hair.

Rinse thoroughly under the water, continuing scalp massage as you do so.

There are a ton of benefits to using a natural shampoo bar, as opposed to your standard bottled stuff. Here’s a basic list of reasons we personally only use our Shampoo Bar to clean our hair.

  1. Most bottled shampoos irritate our scalps. They make Bee’s hair and scalp too dry, and don’t do a good job of helping Col manage her more oily scalp.

  2. The single-use plastics situation on our planet is dire. According to studies, we’re producing a million plastic bottles per minute, and 91% of those do not get recycled. Anything we can do to reduce our use of plastics is a big deal, and it matters.

  3. Convenience. Shampoo bars are super easy to travel with! You don’t have to worry about them leaking on your belongings during flights or long car rides. Just pop it in a little travel tin, and you’re good to go.

  4. Leave no trace. Our soap, and the packaging it comes in is 100% biodegradable and compostable. You can take it on camping trips, and never have to worry about it contaminating any water sources or hurting wildlife.

  5. Simplicity. Call us weird, but we absolutely love having a shower and bathroom that isn’t completely cluttered with bottles of different bath & body products. We get weirdly giddy about the fact that our shower has about three things in it: two different bars of our soap, and a razor. That’s it.
